1) Honey

Honey and sugar both mainly consist of glucose and fructose. In addition, honey consists of a lot of minerals, enzymes, antioxidants (flavonoids- which give honey its anti-inflammatory properties) and Vitamin C in trace amounts. 

Both Honey and sugar can give birth to the same kind of health issues if taken in the same amount. But the reason why honey is preferred as an alternative is that it’s much sweeter than sugar. As a result, a little amount of honey can replace a huge amount of sugar. 

2) Jaggery

Why is replacing sugar with jaggery a good idea? Here is the reason – both sugar and jaggery come from the same source but their processing differs. Jaggery is less processed which means it has a higher nutritional value (rich in iron).

Maple syrup is rich in minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc and manganese. It is preferred as a substitute as its glycemic index is lesser than that of sugar. Hence, it raises the blood sugar level slower than sugar does. But it should be kept in mind that it is used in moderation. 

4) Coconut sugar 

Coconut sugar, also known as coconut palm nectar, is extracted from the sap of coconut palm. It is rich in iron, zinc and calcium.

Coconut sugar is the same in calories as cane sugar. However, it is chosen over cane sugar is due to its lower glycemic index. 

What is glycemic index?  According to www.glycemicindex.com –The glycemic index (or GI) is a ranking of carbohydrates on a scale from 0 to 100 according to the extent to which they raise blood sugar (glucose) levels after eating.

5) Date sugar

As the name suggests, this type of sugar is extracted from the date palm. It has a lower sugar content than white sugar. Made of unrefined fruit, Date sugar comes with fruit’s nutrients. Hence, it can be a healthy substitute for cane sugar.
