A continent is a division of Earth’s land. In other words, a continent is commonly defined as a large landmass separates from other landmasses by oceans. The highest mountain peaks on each continent are known as the Seven Summits.
Have you ever visited a mountain or its peak? If so, you must be knowing the thrill and adventure of climbing. When talking about the highest continent there occurs seven different continents and each one has its own highest peak.
In the mountain adventure world, just like anywhere, it’s best to start small. Whether you’re just getting into hiking and camping around peaks or you have your sights set on someday climbing bigger, snowier, or steeper mountains, some places are better to start than others.
The seven continents on earth are Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.
Each year millions of people explore the different mountains. There are seven highest mountain peaks in each continent.
Highest Mountain Peaks of Each Continent:
1. Mount Kilimanjaro –
Africa: It is located in Tanzania close to the Kenya border and is the tallest mountain in Africa. The highest freestanding mountain in the world. However, it is 5,895 meters above sea level and about 4,900 meters above its plateau base. Similarly, this mount is a dormant volcano and has three volcanic cones titled Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. The first people known to have reached the top of the mountain were Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller, in 1889. Mt. Kilimanjaro is the 4th most topographically prominent peak on earth. However, it is also famous for two special events performed on it. In a report of the Tanzania National Park Authority, on 21 September 2014, a wedding was performed on the mountain below the summit. And in 2011, a couple exchanged their vows at the summit. Also, a new world record for the highest-ever cricket match was set on 26 September 2014, when a group of international cricketers played on a flat crater on the mountain at an elevation of 5,730 meters.
2. Mount Elbrus-
Europe: It is the twin-peaked mountain, the highest peak of the Caucasus, and the highest point in Europe. The taller, western summit is 5,642 meters and the eastern summit is 5,621 meters. Mount Elbrus feeds the Kuban River and covered by 22 glaciers. Mount Elbrus formed more than 2.5 million years before. It is currently a dormant volcano peak. Many competitions take place on Elbrus. The first race took place in 1990 between Soviet and American climbers. Earlier the race won by Anatoli Boukreev, with Kevin Cooney in second, followed by Patrick Healy.
3. Mount Denali-
North America: It is the highest mountain peak in North America. Located in the center of Alaska Range in South-central Alaska, with a summit elevation of 20,310 feet above sea level. Denali is the 3rd most prominent and third most isolated peak on Earth, after Mount Everest and Aconcagua. Mount Denali is the centerpiece of Denali National Park and Preserve. In 1952 Denali measured 20,320 feet (6,194 m) but on September 2, 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey in a report announced that the mount Denali is 20,310 feet (6,190 m) high. Hudson Stuck, Harry Karstens, Walter Harper, and Robert Tatum were the first to climb Denali on 7th June 1913.
4. Mount Aconcagua-
South America: Mount Aconcagua is the highest peak in both South America and Western Hemispheres. It is located Chilean border in West Central Argentina. Its summit elevation is 6,961 meters (22,838 ft). This mountain is also given a nickname as ‘Mountain of Death’ because it has the highest death rate of any mountain in South America – around three a year. More than 100 climbers have died since the records began.
5. Mount Everest-
Asia: Mount Everest is the mountain peak in Asia and the world. It is located on the crest of the Great Himalayas in Asia. Its elevation is 8,849m. The Sherpa people believe that Everest is a blessing with spiritual energy. They also believed that Mount Everest is a place and playground of Miyolangsangma, a Tibetan Buddhist “Goddess of Inexhaustible Giving” and the climbers are just welcoming guests. It is also believed by them that the karmic effects of one’s actions are magnified, and it is better to avoid impure thoughts. Being the highest mountain peak in the world, it is an attraction for many climbers.
6. Vinson Massif-
Antarctica: Its elevation is 4,892 m. It is located in the Senegal range of Ellsworth mountain in the western part of Antarctica. An American team led by Nicholas Clinch was the first to climb Mount Vinson in 1966. “This mount was discovered by the U.S. Navy aircraft” in January 1958.
7. Puncak Jaya-
Australia: Its elevation is 4884 m. It is located in the Sudirman Range of the western central highlands of Papua Province, Indonesia. Puncak Jaya is one of the most demanded climbing peaks despite having the lowest elevation. Access to this peak requires government permission. Closed for tourists and climbers between 1995 and 2005. But after 2006, access is possible through various adventure tourism agencies.
