It is believed that dal bati churma originated during the time of Bappa Rawal( founder of the Kingdom of  Mewar) after that many Rajput soldiers preferred this dish as a wartime meal.

At the time of war, all the Rajput knights would break the wheat dough into small chunks and bury them under the thin layer of sand so that it can get baked under the sun. On their return from battle, they dug out the baatis and consumed them( after slathering them with ghee or curd which is made from goat or camel’s milk.

About churma , this desert had been invented accidentally. The story behind the evolution of churma is that at the period of Rajput, the cook of Mewar’s Guhilot clan accidentally poured sugar cane juice on some of the baatis but when she realized that the sweet water is making the batis soft, then she dunked all the batis in the sweet water for keeping them soft and fresh.

People love to eat churma ladoo as a dessert.

Interesting, how people use their ideas to make the food fresh as well as tastier too. From different places or countries, people come to enjoy the flavor of such dishes.

Every dish has some kind of story behind it. Similarly, it is believed that at the time of king Rao Jodha the founder of Jodhpur got attacked by Rana Kumbha of Mewar. He succeeded to flee from Chittor but was very hungry and for that, he stopped at a small farmer’s house. The farmer’s wife prepared traditional “ Kheech” but Jodha Ji put his fingers in the center of the hot piping bowl and burned his fingers. Then without knowing Rao Jodha’s real identity she exclaimed that how he blundered like a king( Rao Jodha).

She said that kheech is hottest in the center and the coolest at the edge. This prompted the king to stop worrying about recovering the central fort. He started minding on outlying forts which helped him to win and he won Mandore too.
