On hearing the word ‘love’, thousands of thoughts cross our minds, thousands of emotions which we can barely explain.

If we look at this word from a person who knows nothing about the poetic form of love, the one we all have felt or feel for that special someone, it’s just as common as some other emotion.

Psychology defines love as a mix of emotions, behaviors and beliefs associated with strong feelings of affection, protectiveness, warmth and respect for another person.

Types of loves

C.S Lewis states in his book, “The four loves”, that love is of four types.

● Storge~ bond of empathy: When people develop emotions for each other due to certain similarities, liking someone through the fondness of familiarity.
Love of family comes under the bond of empathy.

● Philia~ friend bond: The love between friends, which we all caption as “brother from another mother” kind of love.
When two friends start acting like siblings, taking care of each other, having each other’s backs, that form of love is defined as philia.

● Eros~ the romantic form of love: The feeling of being in love with someone of the opposite gender, the desire to make them happy, the feeling of finding the significant other comes under this form.

● Agape~ unconditional God love: the selfless form of love, which never fades away no matter what ever happens, whatever the situation might be. The unconditional form of love, the feeling of being in love with that same thing or person under any circumstances. This form of love is self-sufficient.

Is love a choice?

Love is about finding joy in mundane things, the smile of that someone can lighten up your day, the sadness of that someone can make you sad, the thought of losing that someone scares the shit out of you, these little things add up to form the unexplainable emotion we call love.

There is a difference between feeling love for someone (caring about a person) and loving someone (choosing to love that person). You may have love for someone forever. But that doesn’t mean you choose to love that person forever. The choice to love is not a feeling; it is an action. That is why it’s so difficult. Love requires you to do something. It requires you to be brave enough to love someone, even from afar. Love requires you to put away your wants.

As the mighty Klaus Mikelson in The Originals says,

“In every moment a choice exists. We can cling to the past or embrace the inevitability of change and allow a brighter future to unfold before us. Such an uncertain future may call for even more uncertain allies. Either way, a new day is coming, whether we like it or not. The question is will you control it, or will it control you?”

Sometimes it’s easy to love, sometimes it’s not.

We all have a different meaning of love, we all look at this feeling from a different point of view, we all have our own experiences.
For some, love is their friends and life partner, for some find love in their passion, for some love is hope, for others love is respect and care.
So to know the different meanings of love, I asked a few people to define their meaning of love, what is love to them.

Love is little things: says Alshifa

Love, is it just a word ?

No, it’s meaning lies beyond words.
It’s something as deep as the ocean and as wide as the galaxies.
It is hidden in gestures. In the anger
of those who care and in the tears of those who over care.

It has the power to heal what’s broken inside a soul.

It gives the wings of hope and makes one feel whole.

Love in itself holds a ton of emotions untold. It is indeed an essential thing in life. Once you are in love or are being loved, you realize how incomplete you were without it in life.

Love is An ocean of emotions:

In the beginning, it appears to be a drop but as we start to discover it, it’s like an ocean, ocean of hope, ocean of satisfaction and, moreover, ocean of happiness. Love gives you everything of course not at once but as soon as you start to feel, even if you have nothing in your hands you will have everything in your soul. Love is pure, so pure that it starts to calm you, even without knowing. It’s a blessing which each and everyone of us will always feel.

Love isn’t about a person”: Says Anushree

WHY LOVE IS ABOUT A PERSON?
WHY WHEN WE ASK ABOUT LOVE THEY START DESCRIBING THEIR COUNTERPART?

Yes, I’ve fallen in love with a person, I’ve experienced the bliss of being in love so don’t think I’m cold hearted.
Love for me is,
The glitters in lights,
The blink which a baby’s eye carry,
The promise which a brother makes to his sister,
The dusks which are more lonely,
The pains which are soothing,
The strings of my guitar,
The songs which I listen to every night,
The music my heart beats for,
The memories which me and my best friends made,
The colors I’ve chosen,
The spark my parents seek for,
And for everything in between.
Yes I’m in love but not with a person this time.

Love is trust:

According to me, love is a beautiful emotion that people have for each other and when you are in love then you won’t be able to differentiate what’s right and what’s wrong, because at that moment the only thing which matters to you will be love only and how to love that person and make him /her feel happy and comfortable.

Love is caring, pampering, sharing each and every thought you have, no matter how ridiculous they are. But you will still love to share it. It is scary, we are so damn afraid to lose that person and we can’t see them in any sort of pain because, somewhere, love also means weakness. Love is when you trust that someone more than you trust yourself because you know, no matter what, he or she will always be there for you. So I think we can’t define love in a few words, it’s a beautiful bond which can only be felt and should be treasured.

Love is calmness:

Love is something which is difficult to explain, and put into words because love demands to be felt. It’s something like showers of rain after an extremely hot sunny day. It’s like a peaceful evening walk by a riverside amidst the daily routine of city traffic jams, like finding a home in a person. Just a thought of that person fills your mind and soul with positive vibes, no negativity, no sadness, even for a while it calms your chaotic soul and fills it with joy.
~ Saumya

Love actually demands to be felt, it lies in those small efforts.

those little things, those sudden thought of that special someone or anyone we care about, those promises, those unsaid goodbyes, those foolish talks, those unstoppable laughter, those beautiful memories, those painful sleepless nights, those not so happy tears, those broken hearts, those random flashes of that someone, those poetries one hides, those moments which you thought will never last, those coffee dates, those bike rides, those songs you listen to, those nights when you struggle to sleep, those mornings you wake up all cheerful, those dreams you wish to fulfill together, those small things which can’t be explain yet can be explained.

One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life, that word is love.
~ Sophocles
