What is the condition of farmers?

Agriculture is the most popular occupation in rural India. It is the only source of income for many rural families. The Indian farmer works hard day and night and provides us with a variety of vegetables, pulses, etc. But they themselves are not able to eat even two times in a day. The condition of farmers in India is terrible. Many farmers suicide every day because they-

  • don’t get the actual price for their crops
  • aren’t able to afford even a single meal per day
  • have to pay huge debt
  • moneylenders cheat them to earn extra money

Problems of Farmers

  • Lack of proper education “Lack of education is the root of all evils.” After so many years of independence, we are still not able to achieve the goal of 100% literacy. And the people in rural areas suffer a lot due to this. As most of the farmers do not know even basic calculations, it is easy to cheat them. Moneylenders and many mandi-heads take advantage of their weakness.
  • Low price for crops Natural disasters and are not under our control, but we can surely save the farmers from its effects. Sometimes when the climatic conditions are not favorable, then farmers suffer a huge loss. Even during the time of economic crisis, their condition is terrible.
  • Huge debt Due to the low price of crops, cheating by moneylenders, etc. farmers get in huge debt. This burden of debt tortures them, and to escape from the torture they choose to suicide.

Existing Government Policies and Programs for Farmers

Some of the most common policies for the farmers are-

  • Soil Health Card scheme – Launched on 19 February 2015. This scheme helps guide the farmers about which nutrients, fertilizers they should use according to their crop type. Also, they get to know what is good and bad in the soil, and recommendations on which crops to grow and how they can improve fertility.

  • E- NAM – Launched on 14 April 2016, the National Agriculture market in an online market for farmers, traders, and buyers. This platform is a great initiative as it saves farmers from getting a low price for their crops. They can sell their crops by checking the actual market price. Also, traders are not able to cheat the farmers.

  • Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana – Founded on 18 February 2016. This scheme aims to support the farmers financially at the time of failure of crops due to climatic conditions or diseases etc. This yojana is also responsible to ensure that enough money is invested in the agriculture sector.

  • Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayi Yojana Launched on 1 July 2015 to provide enough water for irrigation and also focus on water conservation. With the motto “Har Khet Ko Pani” this scheme will help in introducing farmers to various methods of irrigation that will provide adequate water to their crops and use the water judiciously.

  • Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana – Started in 2015 as the name suggests the main aim of this scheme is to motivate farmers for organic farming. Food products that are pesticide and insecticide-free will be proved more beneficial for the consumers. And increasing demand for organic products will raise the income of farmers.

What more can be done?

  • Farmers should learn basic mathematics and social sciences. Also, they should know about all the schemes designed for the farmers else they won’t be able to take the proper benefits of these.
  • NGOs and college students can take the initiative to teach farmers. And the government can also plan one session per month in each village that can be conducted by the government school teachers.
  • All the schemes and policies for farmers are well-designed, but the government should also focus on their proper implementation.
  • Policies to take a loan and its repayment can be made more flexible for the farmers.
  • At the time of natural calamity or economic crisis, the farmers can be given employment opportunities and paid accordingly. These will be beneficial for both the farmers and the government.

Farmer’s life is very hard,
Still, they save us like a bodyguard.
It’s our responsibility to save them,
Otherwise, we will lose a precious gem.
