Have you seen some people saying that they don’t eat certain food items because they are ‘vegan’? Many people don’t understand what is vegan or who is vegan? You might have heard the word ‘Vegan’ many times but didn’t understand or even misunderstand it. So, let’s throw some light on what is the Vegan Diet!

So, if you have felt puzzled about what is the vegan diet, this is the right place. In this blog, I will try to furnish an outer sketch of what is the vegan diet along with a mild description of the vegan lifestyle.

What is Vegan?

What do you mean by vegan? And from where does this word come from? 

The word “Vegan” was initially defined as a diet free of animal-based food. But now its essence is extended to all animal-based products such as clothing, cosmetics, and even medicines.

Donald Watson, the Secretary of the Leicester branch of the British Vegetarian Society, coined the term “Vegan” as a contraction of vegetarianism. 

Vegan means a person who avoids all dairy products and direct animal products like meat, poultry, etc. not only in his eating manners but also in his living standards. This also includes not wearing leather belts, shoes, and jackets, not using cosmetics, and adopting ethical behaviour. Or you can even say that it is a way towards ethical living or very ordinary life.

The main intention behind the vegan diet is to protect animals from torture, cruelty, and exploitation for food, clothing, cosmetic or for any other thing.

Some people may get confused between a Vegan or a Vegetarian because of the belief that they might mean the same thing. However, vegan and vegetarian life is quite different. 

But it’s actually not. There is a huge difference between them.

Vegan v/s Vegetarian diet

Let us quickly outline the differences between the vegan and vegetarian diet.

Frankly, Vegans are stricter than vegetarians.

Vegetarians exclude meat, poultry and seafood from their diet. Some vegetarians, also known as ‘Eggitarians’, include eggs in their diet. Vegetarians also include dairy products in their diet. Now, the Vegans take this idea to the next level. They consume neither animal products nor dairy products i.e. milk, honey, curd, cheese etc. They, however, include the substitutes like soy milk with little sugar, tofu, beans, fruits and berries in their diet.

Now, that we know the difference, let us quickly come back to our topic!

Vegans strongly avoid both dairy and animal-based products. And so they miss many important nutrients in their regular diet. But if they are following their diet under proper guidance, then they make it up. This is because there are many items other than dairy and animal products which are enriched with nutrients that vegans can consume them as a substitute.

Vegan foods include:

  1. Vegetables
  2. Fruits and berries
  3. Rice, wheat and other grains
  4. Nuts and seeds
  5. Soy milk
  6. Vegetable oil
  7. Beans and tofu and many more.

A vegan diet is a very good and healthy diet but if you miss a single nutrient then it might become risky. Hence, a vegan diet with proper guidance is a must.

How to be a vegan?

Vegan is not very tough. If you make your mind, then you can do it. But remember that you don’t do it under pressure like when your parents say that you are getting fat day by day or something similar. 

  1.  Be clear that you want to be a vegan.
  2. Analyse the motive behind it because vegan doesn’t mean eating according to diet only.
  3. Take proper recommendation with your diet planner. 
  4. Follow it under the guidance of your dietician.

If you ask me, I would say that I can’t do it because am a very foodie person. It doesn’t mean that I am non-vegetarian. I am a pure vegetarian but I don’t think about becoming a vegan. 

Vegan at home

You might be thinking, “Now what is this?” Don’t worry. Now, that you know about what is a vegan diet, you’d get it easily! In fact, I also got stunned after hearing this concept.

There are different types of phrases for different kinds of vegans. 

  1. Mostly vegan
  2. 80% vegan
  3. Vegan until 6:00
  4. Vegan at home

How can someone be mostly vegan or half vegan? Vegan at home and non-vegan outside?  I mean yes, it’s good that you follow a vegan diet but “little bit” vegan? How can it be possible? I mean how can someone calculate what percentage of vegan they want to be or they are.

Vegan as an identity

How can you identify whether a person is vegan or not?

I don’t think that a person should be called vegan just because they avert animal-based or dairy products and prefer plant-based products.

Analyzing the definition of Vegan reveals that there is much more than only eating manners. It is absurd to wear a fur jacket, leather belt or shoe and claim to be a vegan at the same time. When you are losing the main motive behind being a vegan than how can you proclaim yourself a vegan? The motive is to protect animals from cruelty and exploitation by avoiding all products made by tormenting them.

There is one more thing which is very important for being a vegan – ethical and simple lifestyle. The first thing is to analyse the motive behind the word vegan. Then use it in your lifestyle and if you accomplish it, then brand yourself as a vegan.

What is the Vegan Diet? – A vegetarian’s conclusion

Ethical and simple lifestyle, disciplined manners and a well-controlled lifestyle is very important as a vegan.

Yes, being vegan is very appreciable. In fact, it is a very good term coined for animal’s protection. And I always appraise it.

Nevertheless, it doesn’t matter whether you are vegan or not. To serve nature, there are many ways other than being a vegan. Just make sure that you are loyal towards animals, society and the environment.
