Who is Arunima Sinha?
Arunima Sinha is an Indian mountain climber and sportswoman. She is the World’s first female amputee to scale Mount Everest. Arunima is also a former seven Time Volleyball national player and a motivational speaker.
Arunima Sinha was born on 20th July 1989, in Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, India. Her father was an engineer in the Indian Army and he died when Arunima was three. She lost her leg in a train accident. However, she never lost hope. She married Gaurav Singh, on 21st June 2018, who is a Para-sports organizer.
Her hobby was cycling and football. She had wanted to join paramilitary forces and also got a call from CISF (Central Industrial Security Force). On 12th April 2011, she boarded the Padmavati Express train at Lucknow for Delhi. After some time, some robbers pushed Arunima out of the train with the intent of snatching her bag and gold chain. When she fell on the railway track, another train on a parallel track crushed her leg below the knee. She was taken to the hospital by the locals. Unfortunately, Arunima lost her leg after doctors amputated it to save her life.
Later, when asked about the incident, she said: “I resisted and they pushed me out of the train. I could not move. I remember seeing a train coming towards me. I tried getting up. By then, the train had run over my leg. I don’t remember anything after that.”
How did Arunima Sinha survive?
In an interview, Arunima told that Swami Vivekananda was her spiritual mentor. She aimed to climb each of the continents’ highest peaks and hoist the national flag of India. People called her insane for her wish to climb Mt. Everest with a prosthetic leg. Ignoring what others thought, Arunima met Bachendri Pal who gave her the courage by saying that she had overcome her anxiety and so now was ready to climb Mt. Everest.
Arunima joined the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering and TATA Steel Adventure (TSAF) in Uttarkashi (India). After the training, she climbed the highest peak and became the world’s first female amputee to climb Mt. Everest.
She had done seven peaks till 2014: Everest in Asia, Kilimanjaro in Africa, Elbrus in Europe, Kosciuszko in Australia, Aconcagua in Argentina, and Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya) in Indonesia. She also completed her final summit of Mount Vinson in Antarctica on 1 January 2019. In an interview, she informed that her next targets were North poles and South poles.
